A Cape Flats Upbringing
Monique’s story begins in the Cape Flats, a community known for its challenges but equally for its resilience and close-knit spirit. Despite the adversity posed by gangsterism, she found solace and joy in the strength of her community and family. Raised by her mother and stepdad, Monique learned early on to face life’s hurdles with determination. “No matter what life throws at you, get up, dust yourself off and keep your head high,” they taught her—a lesson she continues to carry forward.
The Journey Into Law
Monique’s work ethic emerged early. Her first job was as a cashier at Hungry Lion during school holidays, where she discovered the joy of providing excellent service. After matriculating, she stepped into the legal world as a messenger at a law firm in Cape Town’s CBD. This role sparked her interest in law, setting her on a path that she passionately pursued.
In 2021, Monique joined ESI Attorneys as a transfer assistant—a dream come true for someone determined to grow in a large and prestigious law firm. Her drive and hard work led to a promotion in 2023 as a Development Transfer Secretary, where she thrived on helping first-time buyers become homeowners. “Hearing the excitement in a client’s voice when their property was registered brought me so much joy,” she recalls. Today, as a candidate attorney, Monique aims to provide top-notch service to clients while striving to impact lives positively.
Celebrating Achievements
Monique takes immense pride in earning her LLB degree—a testament to her dedication and resilience despite the obstacles. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she is a youth leader at her church, a role she cherishes deeply. “These achievements didn’t come easy but were the result of hard work, consistency and God’s grace,” she shares.
Living by Her Moral Code
Monique’s life philosophy is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start over. She believes in the importance of dreams and urges others not to give up. “Life is a choice; it’s what you make of it, so choose well, because the power lies within yourself,” she says.
Finding Joy in the Simple Things
When she’s not working, Monique enjoys unwinding with her favourite series, Law & Order: SVU, and visiting the beach to listen to the calming sound of the waves. She also treasures spending quality time with her family and friends, embracing the beauty of connection and rest.
